How to Join a Kahoot Game

Joining a Kahoot game takes about ten seconds: go to kahoot.it, type in the PIN the host shares, pick a nickname, and you're in. Here's the full flow, plus what to do if something doesn't work.

How to join a Kahoot game — PIN entry and nickname flow

The Join Flow, Step by Step

  1. Open kahoot.it in any browser on your phone, tablet, or computer — or open the Kahoot! app if you have it installed.
  2. Enter the game PIN shown on the host's shared screen. It's a numeric code, usually 6–8 digits, generated fresh for that specific session.
  3. Choose a nickname. This is what shows up on the shared leaderboard, so hosts in classroom settings often ask for real names.
  4. Wait for the host to start. Once the game begins, watch the shared screen for each question and tap your answer on your own device.

Joining Mid-Game

If the host has already started the quiz, you can usually still join with the same PIN — you'll simply start scoring from whichever question is live when you join, rather than from question one.

Joining as a Player vs. Hosting

Everything above is the player side, and it never requires an account. Hosting is different: to run your own game you need a Kahoot account, and you start the session from kahoot.com rather than kahoot.it — the platform generates the PIN for you to share once your game is live.

FAQ

No. You can join from any browser at kahoot.it. The app is only needed if you prefer it or if you're hosting rather than playing.
Yes. Players join as guests with just a nickname and the game PIN — an account is only required to host a game.
You can usually still join mid-game, but you'll only be scored on the questions from the point you joined onward.
Kahoot blocks exact duplicate nicknames within the same game session, so the second player will need to pick a slightly different name.
